Normandy was the first and I think it was also the largest number of troops disembarked in one day – so you certainly cannot take that away.
But in the end I think Okinawa & Iwo Jima were more complex, for the distance alone if nothing else. Although having a single nation in charge probably helped streamline that complexity somewhat. Incorporating both the Carrier Fleet and Fleet logistics train was a very impressive operation.
Normandy remains impressive because of the risk involved though. There was a real chance of losing, where the others – though costly, were fairly secure before the start.
